Poland in the Rockies is not intended for specialists in Polish studies, though they are very welcome. The program provides an immersion in “things Polish,” from a decidedly North American perspective: history, culture, politics, contemporary issues, and identity, including the complex identities in our multi-cultural societies.
Students are drawn from a wide variety of disciplines including the arts and sciences, law, business, journalism, computer sciences, engineering and architecture. Many are graduate and post-graduate students, and some recent graduates have also attended. The minimum age is 20, and undergraduates must be at least in their second year of university.
While our students are attracted to PitR because of the high calibre of speakers and the richness of the program, they themselves enrich the program with their diverse backgrounds and experiences. While many speak Polish, some do not; on the other hand, collectively they spoke 11 languages, including, besides English and Polish, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Croatian, Mandarin, Taiwanese and Japanese; and they had studied on every continent. One day is set aside for student presentations.
Successful applicants are selected on the basis of their curriculum vitae, letters of recommendation and personal essays, the selection committee also takes regional representation into consideration.
